(...) We turn our attention to one of the most interesting politicians of Austria's recent past: National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP). He looks back on a textbook career. It shows how power works in Austria and what is going wrong in our democracy.

In an investigative biography, we have traced Sobotka's life and career to find out the rules that govern his ‘school of power’: How did the music teacher from Waidhofen an der Ybbs manage to climb ever higher up the political ladder? How was he able to assert himself against opponents? And how did he survive the numerous scandals that accompanied his career?
Our research took us to the centres of power in the Republic. First and foremost to Sankt Pölten to the ÖVP Lower Austria, the state party that Sobotka has shaped politically - just like many of his party colleagues who will govern the state at least until the elections on 29 September: from Minister of the Interior to Federal Chancellor.

During our research, we also took a look at the executive floors of major media houses, which played a key role in Sobotka's rise to power: Harassment, marginalisation, intimidation, pressure and - once again - advertisements are the means of choice when it comes to bringing journalists into line and getting the ‘right’ message across to the people.
